My wife and I are both certified lifeguards, and good swimmers, but not
trained instructors. So, we're as green as you may be, as swim instructors.
We weren't especially pleased with the swimming instruction my 11 year
old son got when he was that age. [The coaching he's gotten since
he started swimming competitively at 5 has been GREAT!] Partly as a result,
we decided to teach our toddler to swim ourselves. So far, so good: we'll
let you know how it goes!
Several comments, based on observing swim lessons taught at various customer
pools. If you want your child to learn to swim (and you should!), there
are a few points to remember. When picking a swim training program, remember
to notice whether your child's instructor:
- can swim well. [Don't assume this!]
- LIKES children, LIKES swimming, and LIKES teaching children;
- is old enough: few 15 or 16 year-olds are good swimming instructors;
- is trained: it's not enough to have a trained supervisor!
- And notice whether the pool is warm enough: children don't learn
to swim well when they are freezing! Water temperatures below 84 degrees
are often too cold for small children, especially if they have low body
fat.
