Curious about a patented pool product?

The links below will take you to copies of the original patents, culled from either the patent databases hosted by the US PTO or by IBM (now Delphion). I used to link directly to the patents on those databases, but they kept changing the links, so I've just saved copies. If you want to check the patent directly, copy the patent number from this page, and use the links above to the actual databases, and search using the patent number.

Why would anyone care? Maybe you don't. On the other hand, the things you can learn can be kind of interesting. For example, you might wonder why Coral Seas (Yellow OUT), HTH, BioLab (Mustard Master) or Omni (Mustard Master) think that putting ammonia -- that's the patented ingredient in those products -- will help with your algae.

If not, return to our links page, and find something does interest you! Interested in a patent you don't see here?

Yellow OUT, Mustard Master, etc.

Those of you who thought ALL chloramines were bad, will find this one interesting! The patent number came off a bottle of OMNI Mustard Master. The patent assignee is listed as "Coral, Inc.".

This one's a real hoot, at least for swimming pool insiders. The US EPA requires that all companies claiming to sell biocidal function for their product must receive pesticidal registration. Thus, all algaecides must be registered, which is expensive, difficult and time-consuming, and often useless.

Coral managed to pull off a neat end run around this requirement by claiming that their product (Yellow OUT) utilized "a method for decolorizing color bodies in swimming pool water". In other words, they don't kill green algae, they just "decolorize" it!

Proteam Supreme, Biolab Optimizer, etc.

Borax, the pool wonder chemical!

Nature2 (Zodiac), "Frog", and other passive Cu/Ag Patents

Most of these patent numbers came off a Nature2 sanitation unit.

  • Patent number 4608247
  • Patent number 4935116
  • Patent number 5352369
  • Patent number 6093422
    - this is a new patent (June 2000) mixing copper, zinc, silver and the chitosan polymers sold by a couple of companies.

United Chemical's Patents (Yellow Treat, No Mor Problems, etc.)

United sells a variety of products containing polyphosphate detergents and bromide salts. They claim that these products will solve a world of problems with yellow, black and pink algae.

Please note that Yellow Treat is BROMIDE based; Yellow OUT is AMMONIA based.
